www.dam.gov.bd is perhaps the most comprehensive source of secondary level socio-economic Bangladesh-agriculture statistical data on Internet. 


What is DAM ?
The Royal Commission on Agriculture, 1928 observed that there was the need for conducting marketing surveys which ? are an essential preliminary to the establishment of an effective policy for the improvement of marketing? establishment of regulated markets, their supervision by the marketing staff, standardization of weights & measures, Accordingly an Agricultural Marketing Advisor was appointed in 1934. Since then several measures were taken to improve the  organization  of agricultural marketing system. In 1943 the designation of senior marketing officer was changed to Director of Agricultural Marketing, the then Bengal and he was declared a ? head of Department? Until 1960, there was, however, no development for regulating agricultural  marketing. In 1960, the provincial reorganization committee approved the setup of Department of Agricultural Marketing (DAM) with divisional set up headed by an Assistant Director and field staff up to sub-divisional level.

What is agriculture market portal about?

This portal is a govt. of Bangladesh portal on agricultural marketing backed by a wide area information network connecting agricultural markets, State Marketing boards/Directorates and also providing linkages to the websites of the important National and International Organisations.


What are the contents of agriculture market portal?

The Portal provides both static and dynamic information relating to agricultural marketing in Bangladesh. The static information is about   infrastructure- related (Storage, warehousing, Cold Storage, grading and packing facilities), Market  related (market fee/ charges, weighment, handling, market functionaries. The dynamic part comprise Price-related information comprising maximum, minimum and model prices of varieties, total arrivals and dispatches with destination.

 

What is the existing data, structure and source?
As stated above, data for the above years are available in the Division which gives size-class wise information pertaining to operational holdings.  In Agri. Census the basic unit for the data collection is operational holding rather than ownership holding.  For the purpose of Agri.  In Districts where comprehensive land record exists, the data on number and area of operational holdings by different size-classes are collected according to different social groups and gender.

How many markets have been covered so far under this project?
So far 600 markets have been provided with the internet connectivity and 400 markets are expected to be connected and made operational during 2005-06.

Who are the main users of BDAM (Bangladesh Department of Agriculture Marketing)?
This site is specially targeted at sociologists, economists, academicians,  analysts & professionals in marketing, finance, development studies and a host of other disciplines, policy makers, researchers, educational and other institutions, corporates, students and others who have the requirement of socio-economic statistical data from various fields about Bangladesh and its 64 Districts. 

What types of daily data are disseminated to the portal?
The portal provides easy access to commodity-wise, variety-wise daily prices and arrivals information of more than 1000 varieties and about 326 commodities from the wholesale markets spread all over the country.  Prices and arrivals trend reports for important commodities.

What is the method of collection and dissemination of data?
The portal is run by the Directorate of Marketing & Inspection with the technical assistance of NIC as consultant on Turn-key basis. The computer facility has been provided at different markets at grassroot level and connected to internet with DMI Hqrs. An  individual market centers enters the data in the prescribed format, using the customized application software żdamwebż.  The information is either sent through State Government or directly to DMI Hqrs. Khamarbari. From Khamarbari it is uploaded to the portal.  The data from DMI Hqrs. is transferred to portal twice in a day, first at 1100 hrs. and then at 1600 hrs. except on market/public holidays.
 

What is the impact of DAM portal?
The portal is considered as an important flagship of the Government of Bangladesh Schemes and efforts are afoot to make it of real use/service to the farmers.  About 600 markets are reporting data every month.  IFFCO, a Cooperative Sector company, has been involved in disseminating the price information to a large network of farmers cooperatives, Public sector banks, commodity exchanges, news papers, etc. are using the site for publishing the data on prices of agricultural commodities apart from other international organizations.

  • Promotional activities are being carried out for the awareness of nutrition and food value of new product.

To improve to Agricultural Marketing system following steps should be taken:
  • Market infra-structure should be developed with modern facilities.
  • Transport and road- linkage facilities should be provided for Agri-business people.
  • Agro-processing industry should be developed with the help of improved technology and training.
  • Establish proper marketing channel.
